DIAMOND CERTIFICATION

Independent laboratories used to designate the qualities of diamonds have become a staple of our trade, particularly over the last decade. All labs will give you the color, clarity and weight of your stone. However, there is an element of judgement involved in the final appraisal value. Some labs have gotten the reputation of being more lenient in their grading and their reports are not widely accepted. In fact, strict interpretation of the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) terminology is often not adhered to. For that reason, we offer our customers a GIA or American Gem Society (AGS) appraisal. And, these days, we are one of few appraisers that can offer this service to you.

GIA developed the nomenclature we use for color and clarity nearly 70 years ago. The strict application of these terms is paramount in determining a true and widely accepted value. In fact, just one grade difference in color or clarity could represent as much as 15% difference in value.

For those with significant diamonds who are considering a sale, a GIA lab report can level the playing field for all involved. The process does take some time and can be costly, but it is usually money well spent. We can guide you through the process as well as help you understand the factors in determining the true value of your diamond.
